Little people break like China
Little people fall to pieces
Ugly pretty major minor
Shoot to kill nobody misses
Little people melt like vinyl
Little people reassemble
Bigger smaller better finer
Little pieces on the table
t.A.T.u. - Little People
... except that Ruby was not one of those little people. Ruby was anything but small, perhaps not in height but in the way she held herself, the way she spoke, walked and did things. She thought of herself as of a higher species, something a salamander has right to be think. Creatures, human or not, have always been afraid of fire. She was resistant, to some point. But that point was enough to make anybody green with envy, and Ruby praised herself on some other things, too.
But it was the way of thinking that got her here, though, in this lonely state between being bored with oneself and not wanting to speak to anybody else. There was little she could do but talk to somebody, if for nothing then to easy the tension she felt in her body and to wash away that feeling of guilt settled inside her guts. She wasn't sure why she was feeling guilty, why it wasn't enough to be on her own anymore, but talking to people could never be bad, essentially.
It was just that the Academy was either on the verge of being destroyed or so quiet that it was almost sinister. 'Go to that school', Marin told her, 'I'm sure it's not that bad'. Only Marin never attended her. Neither of her brothers did and if they decided to send Gemma in, she is going to say no to that. It wasn't that bad, it just tended to be boring.
Ruby was sitting in the far corner of the cafe, sipping slowly on some highly sugared tea and occasionally flicking her tongue around her lips and clicking with it, though it didn't help her much. Thinking about little people, Academy and family never did, so she tried to amuse herself with something else.
