Why bother celebrating a birthday? It only meant you were one step closer to death.
Death was a topic Tam didn't want to think about at the moment. She hadn't attempted suicide for almost a year, and she was terrified that something would trigger her old instincts, awakening the demons and send her spiraling down a black hole of no return.
But hey, no pressure, right?
So she was wandering the shops of Alegra in search of something to buy herself with some birthday money from her Tía Myria. Her tía wrote to the twins, Manes, Sky and Azela every week, including information unique to each letter. Tam's held details about what the supernatural mental hospital in Spain would be like, from what material the bed sheets were to what time dinner was served. Myria also slipped in some information about the beings there, and which ones Tam should make friends with. Dizzy's were mostly about the advancements in medicine Myria had access to - more toys for her twin to play with. She was unsure what Myria wrote to her other relatives about, but each letter made everyone smile so she assumed it was good.
She was thinking about buying herself a new pair of boots or a set of really nice earrings. What else would she buy? Dizzy bought all the books she could ever hope to read, Tam had enough clothes and make-up and anything else she used at the moment. Why not buy something special? She was twenty years old today, after all. That was an important milestone.
The woman paused in front of a jewellery shop, looking at the gleaming gems that beckoned with cheeky twinkles. She mumbled to herself, weighing up going inside and having a look verses saving the money for another day. The sea of necklaces, bracelets, rings and whatever else looked very tempting, especially as she was still wearing the old, cheap earrings she had worn when she had first entered the Academy over three years ago. Her fingers brushed over her ears, absently touching those earrings with the fierce desire to throw them away and get the new ones she saw in the window.
